Car insurance

Comprehensive, or third party, fire and theft, from eight insurers, with the differences explained in plain English.

What we need for a quote

Your driving licence (and years held), your no-claims bonus letter from your current insurer, the car's registration number, any penalty points, and details of any accidents or claims in the last five years. With those we can quote the same day.

No-claims bonus

Your no-claims bonus is the biggest single factor in the price. Most insurers on our panel accept up to five years' bonus and offer protected bonus for a small extra premium, which lets you keep it after one claim in three years. A bonus earned abroad is accepted by four of our eight insurers.

Young and new drivers

Drivers aged 17 to 24 can be insured in their own name or as named drivers on a parent's policy. As a named driver a learner or newly qualified driver typically adds between €400 and €900 a year to a parent's premium, depending on the car; in their own name expect from €1,800 for a small car. Named drivers on a parent's policy do not build their own no-claims bonus with most insurers; two of our insurers offer a named-driver experience discount instead.

Excess

The standard excess is €250 to €500. A voluntary higher excess of €750 or €1,000 lowers the premium; we will show you both figures so you can decide.

What is usually not covered

Driving for hire or reward (taxis, deliveries) unless declared; personal belongings above €300; and mechanical breakdown, which is a separate policy we can also arrange.
